Lip filler treatment is one of the most popular aesthetic treatments in the United States, with about 1.4 million treatments performed each year. If you’ve never had lip fillers, it’s natural to wonder what happens during and after your treatment session.
At Prime Wellness, Jeffrey Sherman, DC, NP, and his team offer lip filler treatments focused on helping patients get the luscious look they want without looking stiff or fake. Here’s what to expect from your first treatment session with our team.
Lip filler basics
Lip fillers use solutions to augment your natural lip profile. Most fillers use hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring compound that helps your skin and other tissues retain moisture for natural plumpness.
Fillers are an excellent choice for people with naturally thin lips and whose lips have thinned out from aging. They’re also a good option to improve lip symmetry and to help your mouth harmonize with your other facial features.
You can have lip fillers or combine fillers with other treatments, like Botox injections, to smooth out wrinkles and lines around your mouth. Dr. Sherman discusses your goals in depth before your treatment to ensure your results are everything you’re hoping for.
Your first session: before, during, and after
Before administering lip fillers, Dr. Sherman carefully evaluates your lips to determine the optimal amount of filler and the best placements for the injections. He pays close attention to the shape and size of your lips and facial musculature, zeroing in on how your lip muscles perform when you pucker or smile. Then, he maps out your treatment individually to ensure beautiful, natural-looking results.
At the beginning of your treatment, Dr. Sherman applies a topical anesthetic to numb your lips and keep you comfortable. Once your lips are numb, Dr. Sherman uses a thin needle to administer the filler. Depending on your goals, he may inject filler into the edges or borders of your lips, the center of your lips, or the corners of your mouth.
Immediately afterward, Dr. Sherman gently applies an ice pack to reduce swelling and bruising. He may massage your lips gently to distribute filler evenly when needed. After a brief observation period to ensure you don’t have an allergic reaction to the anesthetic or filler, you can drive yourself home.
Afterward
Lip injections can cause immediate swelling, so don’t be surprised if your lips look puffy afterward. Once the swelling subsides in a day or two, you see the results of your treatment.
You should also expect some bruising and tenderness around your lips. Gently applying ice packs can help, and in general, most bruising goes away in a week or two, depending on your body’s natural healing responses.
Lip fillers typically last for about a year, but the exact time can vary depending on the filler used and your metabolism. The good news: Touch-up treatments help you maintain your results indefinitely.
